2022 South Africa Car Of The Year Finalists

The South African Guild of Mobility Journalists name the finalists for COTY 2022.

The title of South African Car of the Year has always been coveted by local car manufacturers and importers. Keeping with tradition, the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists have announced their 25 finalists for the 2022 South African Car of the Year (COTY) competition.

Carl Wepener, Chairman of the SAGMJ announced the finalists stating that “This year’s COTY finalists show us the tremendous speed of research and development in the automotive industry. The finalists represent the best of the best in South Africa, and we are eager to see who the winners of this year’s competition will be.”

The COTY competition consists of an overall winner and the winner in each of the following categories:

• Budget (No competitor in this category for 2022).
• Compact.
• Compact Family.
• Mid-size.
• Premium.
• Luxury.
• Performance.
• New Energy.
• Adventure SUV.
• 4X4 Double Cab.

In 2021, it was the Peugeot 2008 SUV that scooped the South African Car of the Year and this year, the finalists looking to earn that title are:

• Kia Sonet (Compact)
• Peugeot 208 (Compact)
• Toyota Urban Cruiser (Compact)
• Chery Tiggo 4 Pro (Compact Family) 
• Hyundai Kona (Compact Family)
• Toyota Corolla Cross (Compact Family)
• Audi A3 (Mid-size)
• Hyundai Palisade (Mid-size)
• Hyundai Santa-Fe (Mid-size)
• Hyundai Staria (Mid-size)
• Mercedes-Benz C-Class (Mid-size)
• Mercedes-AMG GLE53 (Luxury)
• BMW 128ti (Performance)
• BMW M3 Competition (Performance)
• Porsche 911 Carrera GTS (Performance)
• Toyota GR Yaris (Performance)

With the finalists announced, each model will undergo scoring at the hands of some of South Africa’s most respected Motoring Journalists before the winners are announced in May.
